Liao Residence: A Modern Home with Energetic Spaces

Renovation and Design by Chiu Hung Cheung

An aged residence owned by the clients is renovated and modified by the design team. Through the renovation, the new appearance of the space is energetic and expanded. Because the space is full of family memories, some of the materials used in the original house have good quality, the advantage of square layout and moderate lighting, the designers adopt subtractive design thinking. With specific and implicit methods, they retain and modify some parts, creating a modern home atmosphere and relaxing comfort in the project.

The Liao Residence, designed by Chiu Hung Cheung, is a stunning example of a renovated home that combines modern aesthetics with the charm of an aged house. The design team took inspiration from the existing space, which was full of family memories and high-quality materials. By adopting subtractive design thinking, they were able to retain and modify certain elements, creating a modern and comfortable atmosphere.

One of the unique features of the Liao Residence is the use of special room dividers. The designers not only applied storage compartments at the entrance hall but also incorporated metal grille room dividers on the side. These dividers strike a balance between transparency and concealment, inspired by an extraordinary chair purchased by the clients. The chair, with its rich grid expression, served as a muse for the designers, who integrated similar elements throughout the home decoration, creating a consistent and beautiful expression.

The realization of the design involved the use of various materials and techniques. Metal paint compartments, wooden core boards, steel brush veneers, iron furnishings, sandalwood floors, special paint, glass, and non-woven fabric were all employed to bring the vision to life. The result is a harmonious blend of textures and finishes that add depth and character to the space.

The Liao Residence spans approximately 165.29 square meters and features an entrance hall, cloakroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, storage room, study room, master bedroom, two kids' rooms, two bathrooms, and two dressing rooms. Each bedroom has been carefully designed to provide a comfortable and private space for family members. The twins' bedroom, in particular, showcases the designers' attention to detail, with two single beds, two similar desks, and a dressing room tailored to the height of the kids.

The construction of the Liao Residence was completed in Taipei Xinyi District in August 2020. Throughout the project, the design team faced various challenges, including meeting the abstract expectations of the female clients and maintaining the spaciousness of the residence. However, by incorporating multilayer shoe storage in the cloakroom and using specific size arrangements and glass sliding doors, they were able to overcome these challenges and create a space that is both functional and visually appealing.

The Liao Residence has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award is given to designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The Liao Residence stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

Chiu Hung Cheung and the design team have successfully transformed the Liao Residence into a modern home with energetic spaces. By combining the charm of the original house with contemporary design elements, they have created a space that is not only visually stunning but also functional and comfortable for the family. The Liao Residence is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and the impact it can have on our daily lives.
